Additive Data Practice: Screen Coordinate Finiteness

An additive-manufacturing briefing may receive coordinate arrays for a schematic or data illustration. Before calculating a display range, establish whether the coordinates have the expected structure and contain finite numeric values. An unusual array can produce a misleading illustration even when its file opens successfully. The procedure below describes a limited preparation screen. It does not inspect a real part, approve a mesh or report an actual manufacturing result.

Confirm what one array row represents

Preserve the source file, array identity and provider's explanation. Determine whether rows represent points, records or another structure, and identify which columns are coordinates. Do not assume that any table with three columns is a spatial point set. Units and coordinate frame information need their own source statements before the values can be interpreted geometrically.

Check the received shape and data type before choosing a reduction rule. An empty input, a one-dimensional vector and a table with extra attributes require different interpretation. Keep row identifiers or a stable source-position mapping so a later finding can be located without changing the original order.

Create a finite-value mask for the intended numeric array

The NumPy isfinite documentation defines an element-wise test excluding infinity and Not a Number values. Its Boolean result can be retained as a mask associated with the inspected numeric coordinates. Record the actual array supplied to the operation and the tool version if the method is executed.

A mask describes the test's result for that representation. It does not explain why a source value is non-finite, establish whether a missing coordinate was intended or validate the unit convention. If the data type cannot be processed as expected, record the failure rather than coercing arbitrary text into numbers without a documented interpretation.

Keep parsing and finiteness as separate stages. A conversion from text may introduce its own missing markers or errors, so retain that conversion policy with the working array. The screen should remain traceable to the received data rather than hiding earlier changes behind a clean-looking numeric table.

Reduce the mask along an explicitly chosen axis

The NumPy all documentation describes a logical reduction along selected axes. When the intended table has points as rows and coordinate components as columns, a reviewer can reduce the finite-value mask across components to ask whether every required component in each row is finite. The axis choice follows the confirmed layout, not a memorized command.

Apply that reduction to the Boolean mask, not directly to raw coordinate values. A raw value being truthy is not a finiteness test, and zero can be a legitimate coordinate. Preserve the element-level mask where useful so a row-level finding can be traced to the component that raised the question.

Also handle empty or unexpectedly shaped inputs explicitly. A reduction result should not be accepted as evidence that meaningful points were supplied when no appropriate rows were present. The preliminary shape check and the numeric screen answer different questions and should remain separately recorded.

Investigate affected rows without silently deleting them

If actual execution identifies affected rows, retain their source identities and values in an authorized review record. Ask the provider whether the values indicate missing data, an export issue or another documented condition. Do not automatically delete rows to obtain a convenient display range; row removal may break relationships with faces, labels or other linked records.

Any approved correction or exclusion should create a derived dataset with a clear mapping to the original. Record the reason and affected relationships. A visualization prepared from the derived data should disclose the relevant exclusion rather than appearing to represent every supplied point without qualification.

State the limited meaning of a successful screen

Finite coordinate components do not prove that a point belongs in the expected location, that units are correct or that a connected surface is suitable for printing. Geometric consistency, topology and manufacturing requirements need separate evidence. The briefing should describe this stage as a coordinate-value screen, not a comprehensive quality inspection.

Keep the preparation record with the eventual illustration: source identity, layout, selected columns, conversion policy, mask rule and any actual exclusions. If the source array changes, repeat the relevant screen and retain the new identity. Do not reuse an earlier result for a file that only shares the same name.

The original diagrams show the screening sequence and its boundary without plotted points or invented failure counts. Related preparation topics appear in the additive-manufacturing briefing collection and article directory. An explicit finite-value screen helps explain how an illustration was prepared while keeping part approval with the appropriate validation process.
